The Collectors Group

Formed in 1997 at the suggestion of Angela Thompson, a Textile Society member and collector of worldwide textiles, who wished to make contact with others with a similar passion. She felt it would be helpful to discuss the problems and pleasures of maintaining a private collection.

Angela approached several collectors including Irene Barnes, whose collection of 1920's beaded dresses was housed in Bury St Edmunds Museum, before it closed. The late Montse Stanley who had set up her Knitting Research Library and later formed the Early Knitting History Group, now housed at the University fo Southampton, was also instrumental in setting up the Group.

The Collectors Group meets twice a year on the first Wednesday of May and November, at a collector's house, to view and discuss diverse collections, enriching knowledge and sharing friendships. Members are encouraged to take along a few relevant items from their own collections for discussion.

Textile Society members are welcome to join the Collectors Group. An additional £2 is added to the annual Textile Society membership subscription to cover administration costs and postage. and expertise.
