SUMMARY:Queen’s Jubilee Parade Sari - Universal Joy of Families & Communities
DESCRIPTION:Hear from Anne-Marie Howatt on the joy of families and modern British communities – the Queen’s Jubilee Parade sari\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat are sustainable materials for and how do they contribute to performance and costume? How do fabrics draw on history\, culture and communicate the universal joy of uniting families and communities? \nHow did a collaboration between arts organisation Nutkhut headed by British Asian artists\, Simmy Gupta and Ajay Chhabra with arts management and textile design students result in the design and production of the iconic sari featured in the HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant on Sunday 5 June 2022? \nThe sari was the focal point of the procession called The Wedding Party\, where two custom-made four-metre-high puppets stood alongside a six-metre high four-tier model wedding cake\, accompanied by dancers also wearing the Arts University Bournemouth designed garments and fabrics. \nIn keeping with Nutkhut’s artistic directors’ backgrounds and very British sense of humour and mischief the five-metre garment featured corgis\, afternoon teas and Buckingham Palace\, and was selected by Diana Princess of Wales’ personal designer Paul Costello. \nThe Wedding Party celebrated the universal joy of families and communities uniting through the coming together of two people. Drawing on the collective talent of Mela\, it was performed in an elaborate Bollywood style\, by two hundred and fifty wedding guest performers of all ages\, from London and across the country \nThe project itself is highly representative of modern Britain and with true sustainable credentials the Platinum Jubilee Sustainable Sari\, the 6-metre Wedding Cake & the 4-metre Bride & Groom Puppets kept as a legacy by the organisation for re-use. \nDo join in on the 21st of September as renowned textile designer and academic Anne-Marie Howat will be talking about the project as it matured and came to fruition to celebrate the once in a lifetime royal jubilee. \n\n\n\nEvent Details

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is an introduction to South West England Fibreshed.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo harness our local resources to produce anything as sophisticated as a garment of clothing involves many processes\, and a network of farmers\, growers\, mills\, manufacturers\, and designers as well as advocates\, activists\, and bloody-minded facilitators who are determined to create a new paradigm for fashion. \nFibershed is a movement. Its goal: the development of systems from ‘soil to soil;’ where textiles are grown\, processed\, designed\, sewn\, sold\, worn\, and eventually composted. These processes offer a means of connecting the fashion industry with community\, with society and with the environment so that they can all thrive. \nStarted in the USA\, the Fibershed movement uses the American spelling ‘fiber’. DESCRIPTION:Webinar with Gunnar Nilsson\, Collector and Independent Scholar\, Göteborg\, Sweden\, co-sponsored by the New England Rug Society\, Textile Museum Associates of Southern California\, and The Textile Museum / GWU\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCertain textile techniques unique to rural communities in Sweden have a long history\, and the best pieces stand comparison with the most celebrated traditional textile art elsewhere in Europe\, including the best Flemish-weave and röllakan examples. Yet they remain little known outside their locality. In times past\, the peasantry in Skåne\, southern Sweden\, devised and utilised five different textile techniques about which little has been written in English. In this program\, Collector Gunnar Nilsson lets us into the secrets of munkabälte\, dukagång\, krabbasnår\, upphämta and trensaflossa. These techniques\, all of which are represented in prominent Swedish museums with textile displays\, are well known to aficionados within Sweden—people interested in textile history\, collectors\, and anyone enjoying handicraft techniques\, of whom there are thousands across the whole of Sweden. \n\n\n\nEvent Details

DESCRIPTION:Discuss and develop new ways of thinking about traditional craft skills and knowledge within the framework of how we live now and will live in the future\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAcknowledging that craft practice is often placed within the context of the past\, when time was taken to make an object by hand\, we will build on this deep relationship between craft and Intangible Cultural Heritage. However\, the intention is not to repeat what has gone before. The debate will reflect on the value of past practice through the rediscovery of its future potentials. We wish to create a climate for the resurgence and acknowledgement of the essential importance of Intangible Cultural Heritage as a valuable expression of identity and economic propositions. \nThe focus of the conference is on the live connectivity between Intangible Cultural Heritage and contemporary craft practice. Mostly created by women\, these lively and decorative textiles provided a means of self-expression for women and girls of all ages. Generation after generation of makers handed down their needle skills\, creating pieces that reflected personal tastes\, social standing and community affiliation. \nIn the main\, the embroideries were made for use in the home\, as cushions\, towel ends\, bed tents\, or as clothing. \nCommon features included ships\, vases\, fantastical beings\, humans\, birds and even words\, while other motifs denoted regional differences. Some patterns travelled\, appearing on other objects\, such as ceramics\, from opposite ends of the Mediterranean. \nThe selection curated here for the Shiba Gallery begins to tell the intertwined stories stitched into these detailed and delicate embroideries. \n\n\n\nEvent Details

DESCRIPTION:An outdoor interactive artistic installation celebrating Somali culture featuring 360 audio and tapestry.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\ndhaqan collective invites guests to step inside the House of Weaving Songs\, an outdoor sanctuary inspired by the Aqal\, a nomadic Somali home. \nOnce inside\, become enveloped by a series of beautiful woven tapestries that through touch ignite a sonic patchwork of stories and sounds of Somali women’s traditional weaving songs. \nOffering the space as a shelter to reflect on the significance of Somali culture and our collective climate anxieties\, dhaqan collective will also invite visitors to add their own voice\, connecting the city to ancestral cultural practices that are endangered. \nThe sound installation is part of the Playable Cities programme happening across Bristol this July. \ndhaqan collective is a Somali Feminist art collective led by Ayan Cilmi and Fozia Ismail. DESCRIPTION:‘Material Power: Palestinian Embroidery’ explores the historical life and contemporary significance of Palestinian embroidery. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis ancient and beautiful practice remains an important living tradition and the most prominent cultural material of Palestine today. Curated by Rachel Dedman\, the exhibition looks at the ways in which embroidery\, primarily undertaken by women\, has evolved through a century of turbulent history for the Palestinian people. \nThis is the first major exhibition of Palestinian embroidery in the UK for over 30 years\, with more than 40 dresses and embroidered objects on display lent from important private collections in Jordan and Palestine. Every dress tells a story: whether about the lives of women with their astonishing skills and creativity in the early decades of the last century\, or the trauma of displacement as a result of the war of 1948. And reflecting the decades since: in which the vibrant colours and patterns of Palestinian embroidery\, now often created for a global market by groups of women\, have become symbolic of nationhood\, memory\, and resistance. DESCRIPTION:A snapshot of the late Vivienne Westwood’s career through the eyes of collector\, Peter Smithson. Items from the Museum’s collection that echo and contextualise historical references in Westwood’s work are displayed alongside.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis new exhibition in the Fashion & Textile Gallery at The Bowes Museum shows a snapshot from the late Vivienne Westwood’s career through the eyes of collector\, Peter Smithson. Peter has collected Westwood for nearly thirty years\, with a particular focus on the years from Mini-Crini (1986) to Storm in a Teacup (1996/97). The exhibition includes complete ensembles from significant collections across the 1980s and 1990s\, as well as accessories and ephemera from Peter’s collection. \nThe earliest Westwood outfit on display is from Mini-Crini (1986) and features one of her signature mini-skirts inspired by the crinolines of the 1850s. An Armour jacket from Time Machine (AW 1988/89) reflects the shape of metal armour in its construction from heavy tweed. An amazing black velvet catsuit from Portrait (AW 1990/91) is printed with gold ink in a design inspired by seventeenth-century French cabinetmaker\, André-Charles Boulle. Two ensembles from On Liberty (AW 1994/95) and Storm in a Teacup (AW 1996/97) explore and disrupt the history of tartan and tweed in fashion. \nWestwood was very inspired by art and fashion\, cultural and social history. Objects from The Bowes Museum’s stored collections are displayed alongside her creations to show historical sources for her ideas and to examine materials and techniques. \nThey include armour\, an early seventeenth-century portrait miniature\, a pair of miniature Boulle plinths\, and a limited edition Westwood plate with a lace design\, produced by Coalport in 2003. From the Fashion & Textile collection\, tapestry seat covers and a rare pile fabric picture purchased by Joséphine and John Bowes\, are on show\, as well as a pair of eighteenth-century stays\, bustles\, shoes\, lace from the Blackborne Lace Collection\, and children’s clothes from local shop Milners in Middleham. \nN.B. The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between The Bowes Museum and private collector Peter Smithson. DESCRIPTION:Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft mark ten years since our major redevelopment with an exhibition about the museum’s co-founder Hilary Bourne (1909 – 2004) and Barbara Allen (1903 – 1972)\, her partner in life and work.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe pair ran an internationally successful textile studio\, designing and making a variety of fabrics – tweed for Fortnum & Mason\, furnishing fabric for Heal’s and scarves for Liberty. The turning point in their career came in 1951\, when they won the competition to design and make textiles for the newly built Festival Hall. They went on to win commissions to make the costumes for the multi-Oscar winning 1959 film Ben-Hur and the interiors of the UK’s first jet planes. \nIn short\, they were two of the most significant textile designers of the modernist period\, yet they remain largely unknown – until now. \nDouble Weave gives space to their story. DESCRIPTION:TEXTILE SOCIETY EVENT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Behind the Scenes of Nineteenth Century Silk Weaving with the Textile Society at Braintree Museum and the Warner Textile Archive.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us at Braintree Museum and the Warner Textile Archive to explore the history of silk design in the nineteenth century! \nThis is a special opportunity to hear more about the collaboration between the Textile Society and the Warner Textile Archive\, and to see the amazing work being done to improve accessibility to textile heritage in the UK. \nThe Warner & Sons Gallery highlights the breadth of design and manufacture of a textile company supplying royalty\, prime ministers and cathedrals\, as well as public transport and hospitals. Our expert guide will explain several key pieces in the display and give you an overview of Warner & Sons through the ages. You will have entry to Braintree Museum as part of your booking\, with complimentary tea/coffee\, plus time to explore the site and the museum shop. Your visit will then move to the Warner Textile Archive to see behind the scenes in the store of one of the largest textile collections in the UK\, and to hear about the ongoing project to conserve\, catalogue\, digitise and research the incredible artworks produced c.1870-1910 by artists for silks woven by Warner & Sons\, and other businesses purchased in that era. \nVenue\nBraintree Museum\, Manor Street\, Braintree\, CM7 3HW \nTimings\n11.30 – Meet at Braintree Museum shop \n11.40 – Guided tour of key artefacts in the galleries \n12.00 – Opportunity to view the museum displays and enjoy complimentary tea/coffee \n12.50 – Transfer to the Warner Archive (approximately 5 minutes walk) \n13.00 – Behind the scenes visit in the Warner Archive with specialist archivist \n14.00 – End \nNB. If driving\, use the local council car parks. If you have specialist requirements in terms of access\, disability parking etc. please contact the event organiser. It takes approximately 5 mins to walk from the Braintree Museum to the Warner Textile Archive. \nBraintree Museum has a cafe where tables can be reserved for lunch after the event. SUMMARY:Material Power Palestinian Embroidery
DESCRIPTION:Embroidery is the most important cultural material of Palestine. This ancient practice is characterised by remarkable beauty and complexity.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHistorically\, each area of Palestine was known for different motifs\, techniques and textiles. Embroidery constituted a visual language among rural women\, and their clothing reflected their origins and identity. \nMaterial Power charts the evolution of embroidery in Palestine over the past century: from rich village tradition\, transformed by modernity\, to its politicisation in the 1970s and commodification in the present. Over the last 75 years\, embroidery has become a powerful symbol of resistance\, and the embodiment of resilience on personal and national scales. \nOn display in the UK for the first time in over 30 years\, historical dresses sit alongside the voices of women who continue to embroider today\, and the work of contemporary artists critically reinterpreting the practice. Material Power seeks to unfold an intimate\, human history of Palestine through clothing. \nMaterial Power: Palestinian Embroidery was organised by The Whitworth\, The University of Manchester in collaboration with Kettle’s Yard where it travelled from 8 July – 29 October 2023. \n\n\n\nEvent Details
