DESCRIPTION:The House of Embroidered Paper presents THE REGENCY WARDROBE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11.45am – Arrive. \n12–12.45pm – Stephanie will give us an exclusive talk on the background to her work\, her methods of research\, design and making. \n1–1.45pm – Lunch (soup/sandwich/coffee/tea). \n2–3pm – Tour of the house with Stephanie\, discussing her creations. A house guide will accompany us\, telling us about the Gage family\, who have lived in the house since Tudor times. The paintings\, furniture\, ceramics will be discussed. We will have chance to study the Beauvais tapestry The Camel\, one of the Grotesque series woven in 1688-1732. Firle Place was used as a primary location in the recent film adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved classic Emma. \n3–4pm – Many faces of English paper fans in the late Georgian Period\, a talk by Mary Kitson. Mary is a freelance art history lecturer specialising in fans. She is a Consultant to The Fan Museum in Greenwich and Membership Secretary of the Fan Circle International. \nMembers can also bring a plus one if they desire for an additional £45. There are 20 places available allowing for social distancing if still required at that time. \nTrains from London Victoria to Lewes take 1 hr. DESCRIPTION:TEXTILE SOCIETY EVENT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	A talk on the history of the English smock frock focussing on the 19th century as part of working-class clothing cultures and menswear.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us online for a fascinating talk from Alison Toplis\, author of The Hidden History of the Smock Frock. \nAlison’s talk will delve into the history of the English smock and how it developed in the 19th century as part of working-class clothing cultures and more specifically menswear. The smock has had a fascinating heritage and Alison will question assumptions about who wore smocks and discuss why they became popular as working attire as well as signifiers of individuality. Join us to hear more about a significant and understated part of English social and costume history. \nTime permitting there will be a Q&A. We invite you to submit a question when booking your ticket. \nAlison Toplis is an honorary research fellow at the University of Wolverhampton\, UK. She worked for several years as a dress and textiles specialist at Christie’s Auctioneers before teaching at Central Saint Martins\, University of the Arts London\, UK. \nThis is a fund-raising event. The Textile Society was established in 1982 as a educational charity supporting students\, designers\, historians and practitioners.
