It is wonderful for the Society to come full circle and be able to offer this special opportunity as part of the Society’s 40th Anniversary celebrations.   \nThis bespoke event will begin with an exhibition tour of Althea McNish: Colour is Mine with co-curator Rose Sinclair (Lecturer in Design Education at Goldsmiths\, University of London). There will be time for discussion/questions with Rose at the end of the tour.\nThe exhibition tour will be followed by the opportunity for two small groups to visit the Whitworth’s Study Centre. Attendees will be able to examine\, close up\, a specially curated selection of highlights from the Whitworth’s outstanding textiles collection.\nAccess to the public galleries and cafe will be available between sessions. She has sailed the Pacific investigating microplastic pollution\, investigated the impact of Staffordshire’s textile industry on rivers past and present\, and collaborated on a garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show featuring plants that can be used to make or dye our clothes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn the 10th anniversary of the Rana Plaza factory collapse\, Carry will explore the social and environmental impact of the fashion industry past and present\, and consider how we can reshape its future. In Carry’s view\, ‘Fashion is a complex web of tangible and intangible values that extend far beyond the financial. Being equipped with information about the social and environmental impacts of our clothes enables us to make better choices. Daniel started his London Cloth Company 12 years ago with a 1920s loom in a small studio\, supported by a Textile Society Professional Development Award. \nNow he is producing quality woven cloth on his ever-growing collection of restored shuttle looms\, employing the same techniques that have not changed for decades\, and supplying high fashion brands worldwide including Lyle and Scott and Ralph Lauren. Daniel has 14K followers on Instagram\, and has recently achieved a successful crowdfunding campaign to raise £30-35K towards the restoration of an entire mill and its contents\, based in Wales. \n\n\n\nDaniel Harris\, London Cloth Company \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Christine Checinska\nChristine is the V&A’s inaugural Senior Curator of African and African Diaspora Fashion and Lead Curator of the Africa Fashion exhibition. \nPrior to joining the V&A\, Christine worked as a womenswear designer\, academic\, artist and curator. Her creative practice and research explore the relationship between fashion\, culture and race. Christine’s recent exhibitions include an intervention for Makers Eye: Stories of Craft\, July-October 2021\, Crafts Council Gallery\, and Folded Life February 2021\, Johanne Jacobs Museum\, Zurich\, Switzerland. Her recent publications include ‘Re-Fashioning African Diasporic Masculinities’ in Fashion and Postcolonial Critique\, Elke Gaugele and Monica Titton (eds.)\, 2019. In 2016 she delivered the Tedx Talk Disobedient Dress: Fashion as Everyday Activism. \nIn industry for over thirty years\, Christine has created womenswear collections for iconic British brands such as Margaret Howell\, where she was a Senior Designer\, during the late 1990s. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCrafting Difference/Weaving Histories\nChristine will speak to concepts that have been consistent in her thinking\, writing and creative practice\, referencing artists to whom she is particularly drawn. \nThis presentation explores the relationship between textile crafts\, culture\, race and life-writing from Global Africa perspectives. The closeness of textiles to skin\, their presence in our everyday life\, our instinct to touch\, to hold\, to wrap ourselves in cloth creates a sense of connection that opens the possibility of cross-cultural dialogue and the co-creation of interwoven narratives. \nConsidering the work of artists such as Anya Paintsil\, Enam Gbewonyo and Alicia Henry\, this presentation explores what textile crafts can do that other media cannot. \n\n\n\nAlicia Henry\, To Whom It May Concern\, 2021\, Tiwani Contemporary\, London. Previously he was Director of Ikon (1999-2022)\, Curator of Serpentine Gallery (1995-1997) and Director of Chisenhale Gallery (1990-1995). He has curated a number of large international exhibitions including the Biennale of Sydney (1998)\, Quotidiana\, Castello di Rivoli\, Turin (1999)\, Tate Triennial (2003)\, Shanghai Biennale (2006)\, Sharjah Biennial (2007)\, Negotiations\, Today Art Museum\, Beijing (2010)\, the Guangzhou Triennial (2012) and the Quebec City Biennial (2019). Jonathan won the 1992 Prudential Award for the Visual Arts\, UK and in 2013 was nominated as one of the top 100 Global Thinkers by Foreign Policy Magazine. In 2019 he won the inaugural Ampersand Foundation Award to realise the exhibition of his dreams\, Carlo Crivelli (2022). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUnravelling Art\nContemporary artists working with textiles raise important questions about the definition of art. Rather than elevating creativity with textiles from “craft” to “fine art”\, often unwittingly\, they imply a redundancy of the latter. This radical proposition\, counteracting the presumed gentility of sewing and weaving\, is exemplified by the output of artists such as Susan Collis (UK)\, Britta Marakatt Labba (Sami\, Sweden)\, Claudia Losi (Italy)\, Timur Novikov (Russia) and Ding Yi (China). \n\n\n\nSusan Collis and Carlo Crivelli\, Ikon Gallery 2022 (installation). Photo: Stuart Whipps \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAsif Khan MBE\nArchitect Asif Khan MBE crosses boundaries – buildings\, landscapes\, exhibitions\, installations. In 2015 his Guggenheim Museum Helsinki was designed to wrap visitors in diffused light through an intelligent textured glass skin. His Hyundai Pavilion at the 2018 Winter Olympics was coated in black pigment pierced with light\, while the Entry Portals to Expo 2020 presented immense\, intricately woven\, carbon fibre structures. DESCRIPTION:TEXTILE SOCIETY EVENT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Behind the Scenes of Nineteenth Century Silk Weaving with the Textile Society at Braintree Museum and the Warner Textile Archive.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us at Braintree Museum and the Warner Textile Archive to explore the history of silk design in the nineteenth century! \nThis is a special opportunity to hear more about the collaboration between the Textile Society and the Warner Textile Archive\, and to see the amazing work being done to improve accessibility to textile heritage in the UK. \nThe Warner & Sons Gallery highlights the breadth of design and manufacture of a textile company supplying royalty\, prime ministers and cathedrals\, as well as public transport and hospitals. Our expert guide will explain several key pieces in the display and give you an overview of Warner & Sons through the ages. You will have entry to Braintree Museum as part of your booking\, with complimentary tea/coffee\, plus time to explore the site and the museum shop. SUMMARY:Shifu: an endangered textile heritage with Kazuko Sato
DESCRIPTION:TEXTILE SOCIETY EVENT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	This event is a unique opportunity for delegates to engage first-hand with the history and material of shifu – the endangered art of weaving with kozo mulberry paper.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Textile Society welcomes Mrs Kazuko Sato and her interpreter to the UK. DESCRIPTION:Join ‘Soft Power’ Curators Lesley Millar and Alice Kettle for a morning tour\, followed by an afternoon Colloquium with the Curators.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Textile Society invites delegates to join Soft Power Curators Lesley Millar and Alice Kettle for a morning tour on the first day of this compelling exhibition of contemporary textiles. This will be followed by an afternoon Colloquium with the Curators plus some of the exhibiting International Artists\, several of whom will have travelled from abroad to be present at the Opening and will return home after the Textile Society Colloquium. \nThe exhibition Soft Power has evolved from the ideas underpinning the book: Reading the thread: cloth and communication\, published In January of this year (2025) edited by Lesley Millar and Alice Kettle. As with the book\, the exhibition brings together a collection of global voices\, in this case to highlight and celebrate the soft power of textiles. \nThe artworks focus on storytelling. They bring to light personal and collective experiences\, from the autobiographical and hidden struggles of marginalised individuals to stories shaped by major events like the pandemic. \nThe works share intimate and emotional portrayals of self-expression while making bold statements about empowerment and change. They highlight how cloth can connect women across cultures\, recording and reflecting their experiences. \nThis event offers the possibilities of discussion and exchange of ideas and views\, about the works and about the subjects covered within the exhibition. A hub for all passionate collectors of textiles\, it was the first antique fair to specialise entirely in textiles. \nIt brings together antique and vintage textile dealers from around the globe. You will find an array of items from Asia\, Europe brought to you by leading specialists. Many dealers are world renowned experts who offer advice to Museums\, Archives and Collectors. \nYou will find costume\, textiles\, accessories to suit all pockets and taste. From 17th and 18th century to mid-century; precious remnants to court dress and world textiles. \nThe fair is an exciting and abundant source for objects and ideas\, whether wall art or wearables\, the beautiful or the kitsch.
