Strands of Place and Time explores new perspectives on cultural heritage and migration in response to world textiles in the Gawthorpe Textiles Collection with new textile, film and ceramic work by Alice Kettle, Jane McKeating, Elnaz Yazdani, Nigel Hurlstone and Poppy Cartwright, alongside a textile installation by Omaid, a local group of refugees and asylum seekers.

The artists and makers have responded to a diverse mix of textiles from Africa, India, China, Persia, Greece, Switzerland and France. The work they have created is on display throughout Gawthorpe Hall: in the textile gallery, the Long Gallery and yarn-bombing the stairs!

The exhibition is accompanied by a series of Meet the Artist events on Saturday afternoons, 1-4pm:
• 20 July - Elnaz Yazdani
• 7 September - Poppy Cartwright
• 28 September - Jane McKeating
• 5 October - Alice Kettle.

Alongside Strands of Place and Time, Alice Kettle’s Thread Bearing Witness is on display in the Great Barn at Gawthorpe Hall, 3 October – 3 November. Both exhibitions are part of the 2019 British Textile Biennial across Pennine Lancashire.

Strands of Place and Time is a Gawthorpe Textiles Collection project funded by Arts Council England and in partnership with Manchester School of Art, Action Factory, the British Textile Biennial and the Padiham Townscape Heritage scheme.
