Birthday honour for knitting campaigner

Huge congratulations to Jeanette Sloan, knitwear designer and founder of BIPOC in Fiber, who has been named in King Charles’ first birthday honours list.

Jeanette has been awarded the British Empire Medal in recognition of her career as a knitwear designer and her efforts to make the fibre space more inclusive, diverse and welcoming for Black, Indigenous and People of Colour.

Accepting the award may surprise those who hold staunchly anti-monarchist views. But, if you follow my work with BIPOC in Fiber, you’ll know I firmly believe that it’s important for people who look like me to take up space. To be seen in creative areas in which we’ve previously been unrepresented in order for others to feel seen. Because representation really does matter.’
